Modern Warfare 4: Release Date, Platforms, and the Big Changes
Infinity Ward closes out the reboot saga on October 23 — across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2. Here's the full briefing.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches Friday, October 23, 2026 — midnight Eastern, which means 9 PM Pacific on October 22 for the impatient. Infinity Ward's entry is the 23rd Call of Duty overall and the final chapter of the Modern Warfare reboot saga.
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. One notable absence from the subscription wars: unlike recent first-party launches, MW4 is NOT day-one on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft says it'll join the service after launch, with no date given.
The campaign centers on a war between North and South Korea, with missions also hitting New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Multiplayer ships with 12 core 6v6 maps, the return of Gunfight, large-scale Big War maps, and a new map called Kill Block whose layout dynamically reconfigures mid-match — over 500 possible configurations.
Systems-wise, two changes stand out: hipfire bloom is gone, so firing from the hip is finally consistent, and movement gets new traversal options like hanging and shimmying along edges and pipes. The DMZ extraction mode returns from Modern Warfare II (2022).
Timeline for the planners: pre-loading opens October 15, campaign early access starts October 16, and the full launch follows October 23. Also new and quietly great: double XP token timers now only tick down while you're actually in a match — no more burning tokens in menus.
